This Mothers Day, I want to send big love to my mum Laraine (Maxie) and Gaga to our Captain Morgan.

She’s a devoted mum to me and Matthew, a caring mum-in-law to my Gorgeous and Matt’s wife Kate, a hugely fun Gaga or Granny, and from the amount of time we now enjoy in each other’s company, we’re the best of friends too.

Happy Mother’s Day, mum.

Here’s a few lessons this inimitable character has taught me.

1. You can never have too much animal print.

It’s true too. Leopard print is the new black, and it works on your bag, your shoes, your belt, your pants, top, scarf, dress - not usually at the same time but I’m open to suggestions. I’d like a car with it printed on the outside (seriously). Such is our endless love for the print of the animal. It just works.

2. If your child needs you, be there for them. Same goes for your grandkids.

I’m lucky to have a mum who shows all the many ways ‘above and beyond’ to show you care. She’ll warm up breakfast in winter, bring cold cloths in summer, cook your favourite meal (again and again), spend her money on all manner of appliances, clothes and more, even sand down and revarnish furniture needing TLC. Oh, and she’s a dab hand with an overflowing laundry basket.

3. Buy Australian.

I’m in the process of learning to try and buy Australian and this is something Mum has been banging on about forever. About as long as Dick Smith, except she doesn’t go and give all her tinned beetroot away at popular Sydney beaches to make the point.

4. Furthermore, drink Australian sparkling.

While French champagne is the epitome of chic for some, Mum is always much more impressed with the Australian variety to enjoy. It’s part of her Australian-made crusade but also she’s not all that posh about labels, which extends to her love of consuming local bubbly.

5. Talk to people. More often than not, you’ll meet someone interesting.

From caravan parks to the football game, at the markets or the dog oval to people on the street and up at the shops, a day out with Mum always involves random conversations with people you don’t know on just about anything. It’s more fun talking to people than ignoring them, and while I used to think it was embarrassing (oh, those teenage years) now I’m the same. Life’s more fun with a bit of a chat.

7. A winning footy team is a joy. A losing footy team needs your support.

God, she’s supported the Sydney Swans for decades, going at day and night, in rain or shine, from wooden-spooners to Grand Finalists, sitting in Bay 29 with the same people as long as I remember. She knows just about everyone in her area, from Sister Kath up the back to Margie and her many kids who sits just behind. She’s even recruited a handful of her own friends to become members, and it’s a real tradition. Wait until our kids are old enough to play AusKick at half time…

8. Dancing is infinitely more fun if you wave your arms around and holler at the same time.

Dancing is a thing of fun, joy, and much noise-making. There can be comical pelvic thrusts, there can be attempts at krumping, there can be booty-shaking, there can be fingers jutting into the air to the beat, and there absolutely must be sporadic high-pitched noises to emphasise the quality and enthusiasm of the dance moves. A must for parties, also works well with small children.

9. Daughters are both expensive and a liability. But it’s good to have one.

Mum has always said she’s thrilled she had Matthew as a son, as they simply couldn’t afford another daughter (subtext: like me). Dad has always said to Chris that I’m a god-damn liability (including at the first dinner they met) and that once married, I was absolutely non-returnable. Despite the digs, we all have fun together, and life’s pretty damn good.

Happy Mothers Day to all the mums, mums-in-law, Grans, Nannas, Gagas out there. We couldn’t do it without you.

You may have heard on the Bookvine that we’re expecting our second child later this year.

The crazy thing is, having a baby is not that different to jumping into the social media sandpit.

There’s the gestation period, while you build your presence; there’s the newborn stage, when you’re learning and every day seems different; then there’s a blur of activity when you learn to crawl, walk, run and speak the lingo!

Here are some ruminations on the similarities and differences between these two states of being.

New Beginnings

It’s all very exciting when you start an adventure like this, but the newfound responsibility and uncharted territory can weigh heavily on your mind, making you nervous about constantly tending to your small charge.

Most people preparing to take on such a project will experience the first three months in a state of constant queasiness, when every movement is like being on a rocking boat. Ginger tablets may help.

During gestation, the time spent ‘researching’ at your computer or thumbing relevant apps on your couch with a packet of double coated Tim Tams by your side may result in your going up a size (or two).

D-Day Arrives

Going live will mean eight or more hours of hard labour, regular posting of photos to document progress in real time, a support crew to feed you ice by hand, and happy gas to dull the pain.

Both omniscient and omnipotent, this new presence appears before you at all times of the day and night, making you anxious around what to do next. Sometimes, it demands more love and attention than you thought humanly possible.

Once live, poor judgement will be rife due to sleep deprivation as well as a false sense that you are in control. You will never be in control again. This is evidenced when you say the wrong thing at the wrong time in the worst possible way (ref. EnergyWatch, York Butter).

Developing an Attachment

Your little presence takes on a personality of it’s own, and you become fond of it’s quirks. Inspired by the most routine of things, you become obsessed with photographing and life-casting food experiences, babble and silly jokes.

Despite the moments of undeniable cuteness, this new being is renowned for expelling vast quantities of putrid-smelling liquid if provoked, sometimes as if on demand (ref. Yumi Stynes).

Research shows that overexposure to your new presence can result in an inability to have normal adult conversations (“I saw that photo you pinned… so many likes!”).

Same Same but Different

Never fear, childbearing and social media forays aren’t exactly the same, as I’ve discovered.

Yes, Twitter makes us keep it brief, but babbling babies don’t seem to have that same 140 character limit.

And while you can exit from overbearing viral videos on Youtube with the click of a mouse, I can’t find the magic button that turns the sound down on a toddler having the mother of all tantrums in your favourite boutique.

Although, I’m yet to find a way to cuddle Facebook.

Have you discovered any other similarities between kids and social media? What are they?

Tonight, I’m heading to a book launch at The Greenhouse for Lisa Heinze, blogger and author of Sustainability with Style.

While I haven’t downloaded the book to my Kindle yet – am waiting to get a signed digital copy tonight – I’ve been an avid follower of Lisa’s green flings blog ever since I met her at one of my social media workshops last year.

Lisa exudes genuine warmth and effortless style, and has the kind of fashion sense the rest of us delve into magazines to understand. It’s hard not to be inspired by her thoughtful adventures into finding a more sustainable life – the pros, cons, and patience required to achieve it.

The book cover for Sustainability with Style is fantastic – and she crowdsourced the favourite design options from her blog readers to choose the final version.

Here’s an excerpt from a reader review on Amazon:

“Take an episode of Sex and the City (in book format), add a cup of easy-to-comprehend climate science and policy a la Al Gore, a spoonful of useful factoids a la Dr Karl, and spice it all with some Social Inclusion Theory! Lisa Heinze takes us on a journey through a few hectic years of exploration, change, and action. She explains how she has turned her life around, from being part of the problem to being part of the solution for how a sustainable future can be created.”

I love reading books like this - Making a Meal of It was another winner, around reducing food wastage – that don’t pile on the guilts about our excessive lives, but show instead fresh ways to think about creating a more sustainable lifestyle and mindset, and (quelle horreur) even inject some fashion and fun along the way.

I took a moment to chat to Lisa Heinze earlier this week about her writing and publishing journey.

Sarah: Lisa, what inspired you to write and publish this book?

Lisa: Ultimately it was my passion to demonstrate that you don’t have to give up your identity or lifestyle to live sustainably. When I decided to ‘go green’ I had hesitations because I had this stereotypical image of dreadlocks and shapeless frocks that simply didn’t resonate with my personal style, so I set out to find ways that let me be green while still being me.

I wanted to share my story of someone who not only survived my green transition, but who is thriving in her new sustainable lifestyle. I also wanted to pass on things that I didn’t do so well, particularly pertaining to my activism attempts, so that others could learn from my mistakes, including environmental campaigners.

Sarah: On the topic of the book, can you tell us why it’s different from all the other books on sustainability?

Lisa: Instead of being a strictly ‘how to’ book, this is a ‘how I did it’ book. Of course I include my favourite eco-tips and tricks throughout the story, but it’s primarily a description of my journey. I hadn’t been prepared for some of the emotional and social stresses that came about as a result of my green transition, and I hope that reading my story will shed light on some emotions that may come up for others who are making similar changes in their lives.

I also weave some cultural analysis into the text as it relates to group behaviour and identity. There are a lot of scientific books on sustainability in the market, but there are not as many from the social sciences. Combating climate change will rely on people changing their behaviour, and we need to better understand people in our society in order to get the changes we need. I hope my story and my analysis have positively added to this conversation.

Sarah: What are a few lessons you learnt from going green?

Lisa: Research first, buy second. My new shopping mantra. I know that I can’t expect to find sustainable fashion or products everywhere I go, so I must research brands first, and avoid impulse purchases (unless of course it’s at a vintage store, then I’m reusing something and can buy without worry!).

Everyone is on her/his own eco-journey. For awhile I tried to get others along on my green transformation, but because we’re all on our own personal journeys I ended up frustrating some friends instead. Similarly, I couldn’t rush into all green changes at once, because some of the changes impacted my life so much that I had to take more time to figure out how to do things my way. As a result I’m much less judgmental these days about anyone else’s sustainable choices.

Join a green social network. Our message is louder as a group when we band together to demand eco- and ethical-fashion, beauty or food products. Groups also provide support and extra information than going it solo, and of course it’s more fun!

Sarah: What’s your favourite thing about your book?

Lisa: I love (and hopefully readers agree!) that it’s a fun read about a serious subject. I know that I absorb information better when I’m entertained, and I tried really hard to strike the right balance of personal story with environmental research and cultural analysis.

Sarah: After reading Sustainability with Style, what do you hope it will inspire people to do?

Pete and Tracey at eMarketing Connected recently sent through a copy of their latest industry research findings analysing how the largest Australian organisations use social media.

It was a breath of fresh air: usually I’m looking at global research or data with a strong American skew, and picking out what’s relevant.

As an aside, eMarketingConnected provides unique Australian digital and online industry research and analysis to digital, marketing and business professionals.

As a start-up, they have set free membership at their website (at least, for now) which gives access to all their top notch industry papers which, quite frankly, we could do with more of.

Anyway, onto the report methodology.

While eMarketing Connected’s head honcho’s Tracey Brown and Pete Paterson didn’t personally interview the companies in the 56-page report, they did conduct desk-based research across 500 companies and 40 points of data (covering Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn) – one reason they believe it could be the most comprehensive report of its kind in Australia to date.

I hope that the report becomes widely circulated, so they can dedicate the resources to produce it annually.

The research found that 4.5 million people are following the top 500 Australian companies on Facebook, with the biggest followings commensurate with brands like Bonds, Vodafone Australia, FOXTEL and Ticketek.

In future years we might see some of the more innovative but smaller brands, and the most creative non-profits able to garner the same attention and engagement – charity:water being a great example of this over in America.

It’ll also be interesting to see whether YouTube usage increases over coming years as companies dabble in video and vlogging to help give their brand a unique voice.

Also, what will happe to Facebook usage in the future as well as the uptake of newer channels (Pinterest, anyone?) and when still-unheard-of platforms come to our attention.

I asked Pete Paterson a few questions about their report last week.

Sarah: Pete, what brought this piece of industry research about?

Pete: We decided to do the research because we felt there was a lot of anecdotal talk about social media marketing in Australia but little analysis of what companies are doing or their successes.

Other publications have tended to focus on specific channels and a smaller number of companies. We had published a report last year on how companies were approaching Facebook, this has proved to be one of the most popular we’ve published to date.

Sarah: What were some of the most significant findings from your research?

Pete: Some of the findings for us were that 31% of companies don’t use social media at all, this is surprising to most in the digital industry in particular but is comparable to a similar study in the US last year (31% of Forbes 500 companies don’t use social media at all).

Other findings of interest were that Facebook is the most popular network for organisations (49% have a Facebook page) and followers (4.4 million, more than 3 times the combined following on Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube).

Maybe the biggest surprise is that only 2% of companies have 49% of the Facebook following – so a small number of companies really dominate. Also, LinkedIn was 2nd most popular with companies but Twitter has almost twice the number of followers. So, are companies missing out on the opportunity Twitter presents?

Sarah: What else did you take from the research and findings that was unexpected?

Pete: It was interesting to find that each channel gets used in different ways, more sophisticated approaches included segmented different audiences on different channels and segmenting different channels when used by multiple audiences.

Finally, and importantly, we found that content getting the most engagement was generally of a lifestyle or educational nature, rather than promotional or advertising.

Here’s where you can sign up to the eMarketing Connected community for free to access this data.

Tonight, you can catch Tracey talking social media measurement at Social Media Women at the Supper Club, upstairs at the Oxford Hotel, 134 Oxford Street Sydney from 6.00pm – tickets are free and you’ll be sure to learn something.

Easter long weekend has always been one of my delights, time with family and friends and the guzzling sumptuous, just-one-more-then, Easter egg chocolate.

I remember time spent as a kid in the Easter bonnet parade, holding my head high, swathed as it was in cotton wool; in the caravan at Budgewoi on holidays, running wild with friends; and waterskiing up at our old holiday house at 6am on Lake Macquarie with Mum and Dad at the helm.

Then, as I found independence, Easter was spent taking trips to the Bells Beach surf carnival with my crazy fun Red Bull gal pals; and on picnics overlooking Sydney Harbour with my Opera House cronies.

Now I’ve come full circle and enjoy dressing Captain Morgan up as a chick and talking to him about the Easter bunny, hiding eggs around the garden for him to discover (albeit, with some training).

All these experiences include special memories and time spent with much-loved family and friends – hot cross buns savoured during colder Autumnal mornings; Easter bunny ears worn around the house; and an insistence on hunting around the garden for brightly foiled eggs on Sunday morning, no matter what the age.

This year, we are squirreled away at INTREPID HQ (otherwise known as home) as my Gorgeous husband writes and writes and researches and writes in every spare moment in the lead up to his second action thriller book being due for Momentum Books, his publisher, in June. It’s going to be a ripping story, so the time is well-spent.

I managed to even whip up some fish yesterday for a Good Friday breakfast, albeit smoked salmon on sourdough with avocado, rocket, chilli mayonaise and poached eggs, in between writing and reading sessions.

Whatever you do this Easter break, take some time to enjoy your own traditions with those you love, reflect on the year so far and garner some much-needed energy (via chocolate, rest, or other) for what is yet to come!

What are the special things you do each Easter?

That gorgeous author husband of mine has gone and blogged about his Top 5 Book Characters of All Time, and seeing as people like Momentum Books and Melissa Writes have jumped on the blog challenge, here are my top five.

I’m not usually an action reader as Chris is, so expect a few different genres…

1. Miss Honey (MATILDA by Roald Dahl)

Matilda was an especially smart, studious, small young girl had powers to outwit and play tricks on her thick-as-two-bricks parents, who belittled her and favoured her greedy brother over her. Her saving grace was Miss Honey, her kindergarten school teacher, who saw her talents and after trying to alert her parents to their extraordinary child, decided to adopt her instead. Together these two characters were a perfect match, and I just loved that they triumphed over their respective crazed caretakers to find happiness.

2. Emma (EMMA by Jane Austen)

Emma is a timeless classic, but I think of the modern-day Emma played by Alicia Silverstone in Clueless. Until watching Clueless I had a dim understanding of the character’s flaws. Some say the movie version cheapened the original reading, but I reckon it added additional layers by giving it such a loveable, misguided protagonist who gave us such epic quotes such as “like, I totally paused!” after gliding through a stop sign, while learning to drive in Hollywood in the 90′s.

3. Mrs Ogmore-Pritchard (UNDER MILK WOOD by Dylan Thomas)

I’m so fond of this Play for Voices that lines and tunes still run randomly through my head, even ten (OK, 12) years after studying it for the HSC. I especially loved the uptight Mrs Ogmore-Pritchard, who invokes her dead husbands in her dreams – Mr Ogmore and Mr Pritchard – and orders them around her house to do their ridiculous tasks. Mr Pritchard had to take a cold bath (which was good for him), while poor Mr Ogmore had to dress behind the curtain and put on his apron. If only I could get away with that kind of control in my house! She says, “And before you let the sun in, mind it wipes its shoes.” Love!

4. Uncle Oswald (MY UNCLE OSWALD by Roald Dahl)

This dandy fellow, and I reckon an extension of Roald Dahl’s personality, was an entrepreneur, traveller, and serial hornbag – although he preferred to consider himself one of the greatest lovers that walked the earth. We experience the world through Uncle Oswald’s eyes, as he creates what we know now as Viagra (albeit an extreme version), collects scorpions and attempts to harvest the gene pool of some of the most famous men of his time. I particularly love his fastidious nature towards germs and obsession with staying clean. Gorgeous, escapist reading.

5. Arena Halls (DEFENDER OF THE FAITH by Chris Allen)

Well, if you had a character based on you, they’d have to be a favourite, wouldn’t they? Arena Halls is an anagram of my name, and like Arena, we share traits like blue eyes and blonde hair and a few musical interests. She’s a very athletic, toned version of me, which while lovely to read about, is clearly where the Photoshopping begins. She’s the female lead and Morgan’s love interest in Defender, and while I keep asking Chris to marry them off in the next INTREPID Adventure, I suspect she’ll be put aside for an American classical pianist with deep red hair. Talk about 15 minutes!

Special hat tip to Anne Treasure from Momentum Books whose choice of Patrick Bateman (AMERICAN PSYCHO), Anne (ANNE OF GREEN GABLES) and Scarlett O’Hara (GONE WITH THE WIND) for her top five all rang clear bells for me, too!

Who are your top 5 book characters of all time? If you dare to, blog about it!

Wow! Two years already since PlanBig, an online community where people’s dreams chart the road to reality, went live.

I’ve seen so many plans, projects and ideas that have been supported by the community.

There’s ideas for business shirts and perfume gels and new ways for freelancers to work together; people who are trading an egg up to a million bucks for charity; mental health campaigns that reach a national audience; bikes ridden to raise awareness and playgrounds built to give kids something fun to do; laptops donated to people who need a second chance; and kids in India given an education.

Whatever way you look at it, the stories and initiatives you find on PlanBig are astounding.

But PlanBig is much more than a set of dreams. Here’s some of the things I’ve loved doing with PlanBig over the past two years.

Volunteering at great events for PlanBiggers like Bendigo Blues + Roots Festival and the Hulbert St Sustainability Fiesta in Perth.

Hours spent thinking about PlanBig and talking with the Advisory Board and brainstorming with other members of PlanBig on how to make it better for the community.

Painting my dream of watching the moon set over a safari park in South Africa to aid mental health awareness.

Watching Lion Dancing in Cabramatta for the unveiling of a new art mural.

Learning the art of inflating helium balloons to the delight of hundreds of happy kids.

Becoming networked with a great group of social entrepreneurs across Australia.

Getting to know a supportive network of people who believe in having a crack at your dream.

Given me new best friends who I admire and hope to know for the rest of my life.

Bringing people together for PlanBig Meetups across Sydney to help other PlanBiggers and talk about what we’re doing.

Finding designers, website operators, marketers, PR people that I can share ideas with as well as support and receive support from.

The thrill of PlanBiggers helping choose a book cover, read initial chapters and become ‘Defenders’ in the process to launching my husband’s first action thriller (which has been picked up by Momentum Books, a subsidiary of Pan Macmillan, just six months post-launch).

Marking two plans as successes on PlanBig!

Providing advice and ideas to other Planners on their journey, whether a message of support or feedback or specific suggestions, buying and reviewing their product or donating to their cause or attending their event – all which gave much more back to me than I gave to them!

What do I take away from PlanBig?

That it’s important to put your dreams out to the universe, work at it, and see what happens. And that so much of what I do is not about me, but about supporting others, and what happens in between.

Inspired by my uni pal Rachel Hills’ post today on a few of her favourite women, here are a selection of mine, it being International Women’s Day and me being a sucker for a new blog challenge and all.

The common thread is the feelings I have for each of these five – of loyalty towards them, friendship with them, admiration for them – and thankful that each brings energy and fun into my life.

Mummy Gaga

One of the biggest characters around, my Mum. She’s been supremely devoted to her kids from day dot and I don’t know what I’d do without her daily help – back in the 80′s I remember her bringing to primary school a lunchbox with gourmet sandwiches, frozen juice packs and cooled facecloths in the heat of summer. Big hair, big heart, big voice, and a big fan of my Captain Morgan, who loves her entertainment and bestowed her with the nickname Gaga on his first birthday – to her delight.

Jodie McKenzie

Everyone who meets Jodie loves her. She’s irreverently, wickedly funny and brings energy as well as her infectious cackling laugh wherever she goes. Luckily she’s my cuz, and we became Besties over a European Adventure in 1998 that provided us with enough hair-raising anecdotes to last a zillion years. Her kids Louis and Evie must love having someone that full of life as their mum.

Michelle Scully

From an old BFF to new, I’ve known Michelle for two years now, but we clicked from the start of our adventures together involved with PlanBig. Like me, she’s a PR and Marketing type who loves her some Social Media – albeit she works for the biggest PR Agency in the world while I run my itsy-bitsy consulting company from the home office. We share a love of good writing, trash TV, bubbles, fashion, and never have a shortage of ideas and opinions. Will go far, this one.

Jeanette Miller

How can I mention PlanBig and not include this vivacious, bubbly, crazy-haired, straight-talking, colour-wearing, simply luminescent lady? Jeanette has a Very Important Job heading up digital strategy for the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, and PlanBig – their online community helping people’s dreams become a reality – seems to stem directly from her outlook on life. Jeanette wants everyone to have a go at happiness, in whatever size, shape or form it comes. I need a bottle of Jeanette in the fridge at all times – she adds zing and zest to every occasion.

Jacqueline Pascarl

Survivor of ovarian cancer, an abusive marriage and the abduction of her first two children for 14 long years. Author, speaker, humanitarian aid worker, and soon-to-be columnist in Sunday Life Mag. Agent 99 to my most demanding (and loveable) client, Fairy Godmother to my son. She does it all our PJ, but our favourite thing to do together is drink lemony vodka on ice in our kitchen and eat and talk in silly voices about all things. Respect and admiration? Absolutely – with fondness and friendship and affection mixed in.

Who are your favourite women this International Women’s Day?

For those of you who want someone to wade through the online sea of social media knowledge for them, here’s my pick:

Brands Keeping it Real

Pinterest: Is It A Facebook Or A Grokster? - explores some of the copyright issues around sharing and repinning images and content online (paidContent.org)

Oh, and there’s this one…

Tommy Jordan Shoots Daughter’s Laptop Over Facebook Rant – a video response (21 million views) from Dad to his angsty teen daughter’s complaint on Facebook about household chores (TIME.com)
